Basic Principles for Content Inclusion in Canadian and International Editions of SNOMED CT

Content requests must adhere with the following basic principles in order to be considered for inclusion:

  1. Unambiguous:  the concept must represent a clinical idea without ambiguity within the requested hierarchy. It is possible that the same synonym may be used to represent different concepts. In this case, it is mandatory to then refer to the FSN for selecting the proper term.
For example: fundus in the Body Structure hierarchy may refer to:
gastric fundus structure (body structure) or
structure of fundus uteri (body structure) or
structure of fundus of gallbladder (body structure) or
structure of fundus of eye (body structure).
  2. Understandable: the content must reflect the characteristics it represents and be comprehensive.
  3. Acceptable: the content must represent terms that are used in the health care environment.
  4. Reproducible: the content follows a similar pattern for similar terms, for consistency.
  5. Useful: the content must support interoperability and be used by more than one user/organization.
  6. National or international scope: The content requested must have national and/or international scope.
