About the PrescribeIT Subsets

Canada Health Infoway is working with Health Canada, the provinces and territories, and industry stakeholders to create, operate and maintain a financially self-sustaining, multi-jurisdiction e-prescribing service, known as PrescribeIT™. This will be a single service that can be scaled for use across the country enabling prescribers to electronically transmit a prescription to a patient’s pharmacy of choice.

The pan-Canadian PrescribeIT subsets provide a standardized way for systems to capture, store, retrieve and transmit related health information.

Draft Subsets

Subsets are considered draft when one or more of the following conditions apply:

 - Lack on consensus on the content prior to publication

 - Content may be missing from the published subset

 - Content contains pre-adopted codes

Pre-Adopting Codes

Pre-adoption is defined as implementing a new code before it is official released in the next version of the reference terminology.

Pre-adopted codes can be found in the following subsets, for more information on the codes, see the individual release pages:

  • PrescriptionIndicationForUse (SNOMED CT Canadian Extension)
  • PrescriptionMedicinalProduct (Canadian Clinical Drug Data Set)

Known Issues with the July 2017 release of PrescribeIT subsets:

  • The guidelines for identifying a subset as draft were not consistently followed. In cases where the reference terminology was managed by Infoway, the risk of pre-adoption was low and the subsets were published as an Initial release.
  • IndicationForUse subset should be considered a starter set because there was insufficient consensus on the content.
  • PrescriptionMedicinalProduct is missing content based on the scope.
