This page provides a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the Projectathon 2023. We will continue to build on this list as additional questions arise.

Projectathons are an important step and best-practice approach in testing and validation of a specification package, where implementers demonstrate live interoperability of solutions in conformance with pan-Canadian specifications. Test scenarios are managed using the Canadian version of the Gazelle interoperability testing platform. Projectathon 2023 will be dedicated to supporting Patient Summary implementation projects across Canada and is focused on testing the harmonized national and provincial interoperability Patient Summaries specifications (i.e., PS-CA, PS-ON, PS-AB). Testing will focus on the secure exchange, document format and content validation of FHIR patient summary documents.

Infoway, in collaboration with provinces and territories, invites vendors to participate in Projectathon 2023. All jurisdictions have contributed to the design and review of the pan-Canadian Patient Summary specification, with Alberta and Ontario leading implementation efforts beginning in 2023. As a result of this close collaboration, the national and provincial Patient Summary specifications are harmonized and ready for trial implementation. Other jurisdictions will leverage the learnings from the early implementation efforts of Alberta and Ontario.

Projectathon 2023 is scheduled for March 2023.

Two days of effort per vendor are generally sufficient for testing after suitable preparation. Preparation time is difficult to estimate as familiarity with FHIR resources and tooling varies by vendor. Infoway will support vendors to connect to the test environment and to prepare for the event. Continue to “Watch” the Projectathon March 2023 InfoScribe page for education materials.

This event is not part of a certification program. Projectathon 2023 is focused on Patient Summaries and the goal of this event is to bring implementers together to demonstrate live interoperability and readiness to implement harmonized national and provincial specifications. Detailed test results by vendor solution will be published in the Projectathon 2023 Final Report

No, this event in not part of a certification program. The goal of the Projectathon is to bring implementers together to demonstrate live interoperability and readiness to implement harmonized national and provincial specifications (ON & AB). Detailed test results by vendor solution will be published in the Projectathon 2023 Final Report.

No, there is no fee to participate.

  • Vendors will benefit from a single conformance event to demonstrate pre-implementation readiness in multiple provinces, accelerating their readiness across the country.
  • Vendors should be able to build a single codebase for implementation across multiple provinces, supporting small differences through configuration.
  • Vendors that successfully demonstrate interoperability will enhance their brand and demonstrate market leadership. Detailed test results by vendor solution will be published in the Projectathon 2023 Final Report.
  • Vendors will have the opportunity to provide valuable feedback for continuous improvement of the Projectathon conformance process and tooling, as well as the specifications being tested.

No, the PS-AB and PS-ON specifications are very closely aligned to the PS-CA and should be supported by minimal configuration of capability in the vendor systems. The test package will include test cases, test data and clinical scenarios to support validation of the PS-CA, PS-AB and PS-ON. The test cases will highlight where configuration is needed and test that it is applied properly.
