Overview

Based on the international SNOMED CT Medicinal Product Model, the CMT model is developed to represent a Canadian drug dictionary in a standardized way. The CMT model leverages the SNOMED International drug classes and aligns with the SNOMED CT Drug Model for National Extensions to add Canadian specific classes that represent the Canadian real use cases. The high-level CMT data model is shown in the figure below. Please note that for the phase 1 of the Canadian Medicines Terminology (CMT) project, only the six upper classes (boxes) illustrated below are created.

The left side of the model represents the "virtual" side of medicinal products, which corresponds to the abstract form of the products. These concepts are supported and are found mainly in the International Edition of SNOMED CT.

The right side of the model represents the "real/trade" side of the medicinal products, which corresponds to the commercial form of the products. These concepts are not included in the scope of the International Edition and are therefore created in the Canadian Edition of SNOMED CT.

Class Relationships

The model uses the generalization / specification relationship between the mirrored “traded” classes of the Canadian extension and their abstract “virtual” classes in the international core.

Relationship between International and CMT data model

To ensure interoperability, the Canadian SNOMED CT Drug Extension leverages most of the international SNOMED CT attribute relationships needed to define medicinal product concepts in a national extension. To support the trade side classes, concepts for suppliers and product names have been created but will remain only in the Canadian Edition considering their scope. Most of the substance, pharmaceutical dose form, and unit of presentation used in the different classes of the CMT attribute values are leveraged from the international content, with some exceptions.
