General Note

The ImmunizationRouteofAdministrationCode subset was developed based on stakeholder input and existing Public Health standards for the required data that need to be captured from the Public Health care providers.  The process included review of the route of administrations included in the Canadian Immunization Guide, confirmation of SNOMED CT active concepts and review and final approval by the Public Health Surveillance Community.

Scope Definition:

The path the administered immunization takes to get into the body. The subset has been curated specifically to capture only routes of administration relevant to immunization.

Preferred Synonyms

SNOMED CT has general editorial guidelines that state that “abbreviations and acronyms are allowed in a preferred term or synonym when followed by the term expansion.” The general structure of synonyms with abbreviations is to have the abbreviation followed by a space, hyphen, space, and the term expansion. In the Canadian Edition, an exception was made to accommodate the request of stakeholders to start with the term expansion.

The format for the Preferred Synonym in the Canadian English and French language reference sets is as follows:

  • Pattern:  (Route of administration): (Abbreviation)
  • Example English PT: Oral: PO
  • Example English PT: voie orale: PO
