The Canadian Edition package includes one (1) set of files for referencing the Canadian English (EN CA), the Canadian French (FR CA), the Canadian reference sets content and the July 2019 March 2020 version of SNOMED CT International. This publication format is provided as a convenient package to Canadian stakeholders to facilitate implementation if there is no need to use the separate Canadian Extension* files separately. The content of this package has are not required. Package contents have been pre-computed and harmonized based on the module dependency when several extensions are merged. 

The package is a zip file that includes text files in the RF2 format as per the SNOMED International specifications. The files provide the three (3) types of releases: full, delta and snapshot. Each type of release file includes refset files and terminology core files.

 

*  The Canadian Extension package will be is available only upon request. It consists of different separate modules and files that can be implemented individually: there is a module one for the EN CA content and the references sets, and one for the FR CA content. 

Release Scope

  1. Request for change received from Canadian implementers from March 15September 6, 2019 to September March 6, 2019 2020 - InfoRMS SNOMED CT RFC Project
    1. Requests to add, change or inactivate content in both English and French 
    2. Corrections to content Content corrections (typographical errors, metadata, others)  
    3. EN CA concepts promoted to international version of SNOMED CT
    4. NOTE: There is a number of Several requests that are "Issues in progress". This means that new concepts were created and were added to the September 2019 March 2020 Canadian Edition. The same concepts have also been submitted to SNOMED International for core inclusion consideration. If they are accepted, they will then be included in the July 2020 International version of January 2020 release, requiring and will require harmonization for with the next March September 2020 Canadian Edition.

  2. Subsets - InfoRMS Subset RFC Project
    1. Subsets updatedUpdated subsets: Immunization subsets , Communicable Disease subsets ,Primary Health Care subsets  and others
    2. No subsets are inactivated from the Canadian Edition
    3. The CA Canadian Edition Refset module contains the filter definition for 14 of the extensional published reference sets. They can be found in the Simple query specification reference set (foundation metadata concept). 
    4. Note that all All reference sets are also published as a simple reference set (enumerated).



  3. New in this release
    1. OWL DL Enhancement
    2. March Release of SNOMED International 
      1. In cases where a global emergency persists and warrants action, for example SARS in 2013 and the current COVID-19 situation, SNOMED International has taken steps to issue an interim release of the SNOMED CT International Edition to serve a public good.  With this release, clinicians, researchers and administrators globally are able to code, analyze and plan to address the Coronavirus effort with the most up to date terminology.  
      2. The March Release of SNOMED International 2020 is an interim release that contains relevant COVID-19 concepts including any applicable changes to descriptions: 24 records have been added, plus core concept descriptions.
      3. The March Release of SNOMED International Release Note is included in the CA Edition package for the detailed information.
         
    3. French translation
      1. This release include all translated terms from the French common translation produced by the SNOMED International Members Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Luxemburg, by the Affiliate Phast, as well as the “French Starter Set” produced by the Swiss Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève on behalf of SNOMED International. 

        1. This first release of the common French translation of SNOMED CT has an effective time of 2020310. 

        2. It includes translation of all COVID-19 related concepts.

        3. At this point, the common French translation of SNOMED CT is not distributed by SNOMED International. It may be published as part of a national edition of any of the Members involved in the production of this translation.

    2. To enable improvements to the quality and analytics capabilities of SNOMED CT, SNOMED International has enhanced the underlining logic profile of the terminology. The changes are now using the Web Ontology Language (OWL) for expressing the concept definitions  These expressions are published as an RF2 compliant reference set, replacing the stated relationships file. The stated relationships file have been deprecated in this release of the CA Edition, as they were deprecated in the July 2019 International release. 
    3. All previous stated relationships have been inactivated since that way of distributing the authoring assertions have been replaced by the OWL refset axioms. This means that all previously active concepts now have their concept definitions expressed in the new format.

    5. French translation
      1. Thank you to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) for donation of French terms. The terms donated were related to the CIHI Reference Data Model Toolkit (CRDM Toolkit). They covered “Specimen Type”, “ Organ Type” and “Device Type”. The related InfoRMS batches are: BSCT-8801, BSCT-8734, BSCT-8792.
